Tennis Classes Burlingame

A tennis coach near you who coaches the player, not the template

If you have searched for “tennis lessons near me” and found a long list of names with no real way to tell them apart, here is what sets us apart. At Apex Court Academy every tennis instructor builds the lesson around where you are today: your strokes, your footwork, your fitness and what you want from the game.

We coach complete beginners who have never held a racket, adults returning after years away, kids taking their first swings and tournament players chasing a higher rating. Technique, movement and match strategy are all part of the training, so what you practice on court carries into real points.
Based in Burlingame, we teach across the Peninsula, and we also run tennis and pickleball under one academy if you want to try both.

Tennis classes and lessons for every player

Pick the format that suits your goals and budget. Not sure which one fits? Tell us a little about your game and we will point you to the right start.

Private tennis lessons

One coach, one player, full attention. A private tennis coach can correct your grip, swing path and footwork in real time, which makes this the quickest route to visible change. Ideal for beginners who want a solid foundation and for competitive players working on specific weaknesses.

Adult tennis lessons

Adult beginner tennis lessons and coaching for improving players, taught in a relaxed, no-pressure setting. We cover the grip, forehand, backhand, serve and court movement so you can rally with confidence and start playing games.

Beginner tennis lessons

New to the sport? Learn tennis step by step: how to hold the racket, make clean contact, keep a rally going and understand scoring. Lessons for beginners focus on simple, repeatable habits instead of overwhelming you with theory.

Junior tennis lessons

Junior tennis programs grouped by age and ability, with a gradual ball progression and game-based drills that keep children moving and smiling. Kids build coordination, agility and good technique from the first session.

Seniors, couples and returning players

Senior tennis lessons paced to your comfort, and semi-private lessons for couples, friends or family who want to learn and play together. A friendly way to stay active, social and sharp on court.

Tennis training and camps

For players who want more intensity, our tennis training sessions and summer camps combine live-ball drills, footwork ladders and conditioning to build stamina, speed and match toughness.
Private, semi-private or group: which tennis lesson is right for you?

Each format has a place. Use this guide to match the lesson to your goal. If you are looking for affordable tennis lessons, group and semi-private sessions are usually the most economical way to get quality coaching, and our team can walk you through current options.

Format Best for What you get Cost level
Private lesson Fast technique change, beginners who want a strong start, tournament prep Complete focus from your coach and a plan built around you Highest per session
Semi-private Couples, friends, siblings or parent and child Personal feedback while sharing the session and the cost Moderate
Small group class Social learners, adults and kids who enjoy playing with others Structured drills, partner work and a lively court atmosphere Most affordable
Clinics and camps Players wanting high-energy, game-style training Live-ball drills, conditioning and match play over several hours or days Varies by program
Tennis Classes Burlingame

What happens in your first Tennis Classes Burlingame

Nervous about your first session? Most people are. There is nothing to prepare beyond comfortable athletic clothes and non-marking court shoes. If you do not own a racket yet, tell us when you book and we can supply equipment for the first lesson.
1.  A quick, friendly assessment

Your coach asks about your goals and watches a few easy rallies to see where you are starting from

2.  One or two focused fixes
Instead of piling on tips, we pick the changes that will help you most right now and practice them until they feel natural.
3. A clear plan for next time
You leave knowing what you improved, what to practice on your own and which lesson format will help you progress.

Junior tennis lessons for ages 4 and up

Parents often ask whether their child is ready and what a lesson will look like. Children learn tennis best through movement and play, so our junior tennis programs are grouped by age and skill and kept active, positive and fun.

Little beginners

Tennis lessons for 4 and 5 year olds start with balance, coordination and hand-eye games using lighter equipment, so first experiences feel like play.

Building strokes

For kids around 6 to 8 we introduce proper grips, swings and rallying with slower balls, then move up through the orange and green ball stages as skills grow.

Ready to compete

Older juniors, including 10 year olds and up, work on yellow-ball rallies, footwork, serves and match tactics with game-based drills.

Read more on our junior tennis development page, or contact us to confirm the right group for your child’s age and level.

My son (7yro) has taken tennis lessons at 3 different academy before finding Coach Lucas & we are finally happy! What we noticed at other academy is that they will tell you by words on how to fix your form across the net but my son was still hitting it wrongly because it was hard to change his form with just verbal guidance. Coach Lucas is hands on on fixing how to properly hit so my son learns the basic techniques correctly first which we love! He also is very friendly and makes the class fun which makes my son & his friends engaged. We highly recommend him :)

I have taken several of Lucas’ pickleball classes. He is a great coach with positive and encouraging feedback. In addition to gameplay, we’ve done a wide variety of drills to improve our shot accuracy and game strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Prices depend on the format (private, semi-private or group), the coach and how many sessions you book. Group and semi-private lessons are usually the most affordable way to get professional coaching, while private lessons cost more per session because you get one-on-one attention. For most players, yes, especially if you want to change a grip, fix a stroke or build a strong base quickly. A private tennis coach sees every swing and can correct it immediately. Many students combine occasional private lessons with group classes to keep improving while playing more points.

Private lessons give you the coach's full attention and a plan built around you. Group classes cost less, use structured drills and partner play, and add a social side. Semi-private lessons sit in between, letting two or three people share a session and the cost.

Absolutely. Many of our students pick up a racket for the first time as adults. Adult beginner tennis lessons start with the basics, such as grip, a simple forehand and backhand, and moving to the ball, and progress at a pace that feels comfortable. It is never too late to start.

Many children start around age 4 or 5 with short, play-based sessions that develop balance, coordination and racket skills. Older kids are grouped by age and ability and progress through orange, green and yellow balls. Contact us and we will recommend the right group for your child.

Wear comfortable athletic clothing and non-marking court shoes, and bring water. If you do not have a racket yet, let us know when you book and we can provide equipment for your first lesson.

It varies with age, fitness and how often you practice. Many beginners are able to keep a short rally going after a handful of lessons, and most students notice measurable improvement within the first few sessions. Weekly lessons plus a little practice between sessions give the best results.

Once a week is a good rhythm for most beginners and improving players. Competitive juniors and adults preparing for tournaments often add a second session or a clinic. Your coach will suggest a schedule based on your goals.

Yes. Senior tennis lessons are paced to your comfort, women's and mixed adult classes are welcoming for all levels, and semi-private lessons work well for couples, friends or family members who want to learn together.
