Tennis Classes Burlingame

San Mateo tennis coaching that starts with your game

The right lesson should give you practical guidance rather than a one-size-fits-all routine. Your coach can focus on the parts of your game that need attention, from racket preparation and timing to court positioning and shot selection.

Whether you are learning the basics, returning to the court or preparing for more competitive play, sessions can be adjusted to your current ability. Lessons may include stroke practice, movement patterns, rallying and simple point-play situations.

Apex Court Academy is based in Burlingame and arranges coaching across nearby Peninsula communities. Contact the team to discuss your preferred location and the lesson options currently available.

Tennis classes San Mateo for every kind of player

Think about how much individual feedback you want, whether you prefer learning with a partner, and what you hope to improve. The academy can help you compare lesson formats before choosing a starting point.

Private tennis lessons

Work one-to-one with a coach on a plan shaped around your game. Individual lessons allow more time to review technique, repeat challenging shots and set focused practice goals for your next visit.

Adult tennis lessons

Adult sessions can cover the fundamentals or help refine an existing game. Depending on your needs, practice may include groundstrokes, serves, recovery steps, consistency and learning how to construct a point.

Tennis training programs

New players can start with racket control, ready position, contact point and basic rally skills. Lessons build gradually, allowing you to practice each movement before adding more pace or match rules.

Junior tennis lessons

Junior coaching introduces tennis through age-appropriate activities and manageable challenges. Coaches can adapt drills to each child’s confidence and coordination while developing movement, ball control and good court habits.

Seniors, couples and returning players

Players can request a comfortable pace, while friends or couples may prefer to share a session. Semi-private coaching creates opportunities to practise together and receive feedback without making the lesson feel overly formal.

Tennis training and camps

For players seeking a more active session, training can combine movement drills, rally exercises and point-based practice. Ask about current programs and availability when you contact the academy.
Private, semi-private or group: choosing the right class

Every format has its strengths, and this table shows which one lines up with your goal. Looking for affordable tennis lessons? Shared sessions and group classes generally give you the most coaching for the money, and we can explain what is currently available.

Format Best for What you get Cost level
Private lesson Quick technique changes, new players wanting a solid start, competition prep The coach's undivided attention and a plan designed around you Highest per session
Semi-private Couples, friends, siblings or a parent and child Individual feedback with the session and fee shared Moderate
Small group class Players who like learning alongside others, adults and kids alike Organized drills, partner rallies and an upbeat court atmosphere Most affordable
Clinics and camps Players seeking energetic, match-style training Live-ball drills, conditioning and point play across hours or days Varies by program
Tennis Classes San Mateo

What to expect at your first tennis class

Your first session is a chance to talk through your goals and get comfortable on court. Wear sports clothing and court-appropriate shoes, bring water, and ask in advance whether a loan racket can be arranged.

1. A short, relaxed warm-up

Start with a quick conversation about your experience and what you would like to learn, followed by simple movements or rallies to assess your current level.

2. A couple of targeted changes

Your coach selects a small number of useful changes, demonstrates them and gives you time to practice with feedback.

3. A clear next step

Before you leave, review the key takeaway from the session and agree on a practical skill to work on before your next class.

Junior tennis classes in San Mateo for ages 4 and up

Junior lessons should match a child’s stage of development. Activities can introduce racket skills and movement first, then gradually add rallying, serving and basic match play as confidence grows.

First swings

For younger children, simple movement games and gentle ball activities help build coordination and comfort holding a racket.

Learning the strokes

Children in this age range can practise contact, direction and short rallies with equipment and balls suited to their developing skills.

Stepping up

Older juniors can work toward longer rallies, serve technique, court coverage and introductory tactics through structured games.

Learn more on our junior tennis development page, or contact us and we will confirm the best group for your child’s age and level.

Why San Mateo players train with Apex Court Academy

Qualified, seasoned coaches

The coaching team includes Lucas Rosenberg, a USTA 5.0-rated player, and Eric Dennis, whose tennis background spans more than two decades.

Visible progress

Lessons can be organized around practical targets, giving you a clear focus for each visit and a way to review what you have been practising.

Scheduling that bends to your week

Scheduling depends on coach and court availability. Contact the academy to ask about weekday, weekend or later-day options.

Corrections you can feel

Coaches can demonstrate a technique, watch you try it and offer specific pointers you can apply during the same session.

A friendly court with no pressure

Questions are welcome at every level. The aim is to make practice constructive and approachable, whether you are new to tennis or rebuilding confidence.

Tennis and pickleball in one place

If you play another racket sport, mention it to your coach; some movement and hand-eye coordination skills may carry over, while tennis technique still needs dedicated practice.

My son (7yro) has taken tennis lessons at 3 different academy before finding Coach Lucas & we are finally happy! What we noticed at other academy is that they will tell you by words on how to fix your form across the net but my son was still hitting it wrongly because it was hard to change his form with just verbal guidance. Coach Lucas is hands on on fixing how to properly hit so my son learns the basic techniques correctly first which we love! He also is very friendly and makes the class fun which makes my son & his friends engaged. We highly recommend him :)

I have taken several of Lucas’ pickleball classes. He is a great coach with positive and encouraging feedback. In addition to gameplay, we’ve done a wide variety of drills to improve our shot accuracy and game strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pricing varies by coach, session length and whether you book alone or share the court. Contact Apex Court Academy for current rates and available packages.

Consider a shared semi-private session or a group class if one is available for your level. Tell the academy your preferred schedule and budget so it can explain suitable choices.

For most players, yes, especially if you want to change a grip, fix a stroke or build a strong base quickly. A private tennis coach sees every swing and can correct it immediately. Many students combine occasional private lessons with group classes to keep improving while playing more points.

Private lessons give you the coach's full attention and a plan built around you. Group classes cost less, use structured drills and partner play, and add a social side. Semi-private lessons sit in between, letting two or three people share a session and the cost.

Absolutely. Many of our students pick up a racket for the first time as adults. Adult beginner tennis lessons start with the basics, such as grip, a simple forehand and backhand, and moving to the ball, and progress at a pace that feels comfortable. It is never too late to start.

Many children start around age 4 or 5 with short, play-based sessions that develop balance, coordination and racket skills. Older kids are grouped by age and ability and progress through orange, green and yellow balls. Contact us and we will recommend the right group for your child.

Wear comfortable athletic clothing and non-marking court shoes, and bring water. If you do not have a racket yet, let us know when you book and we can provide equipment for your first lesson.

It varies with age, fitness and how often you practice. Many beginners are able to keep a short rally going after a handful of lessons, and most students notice measurable improvement within the first few sessions. Weekly lessons plus a little practice between sessions give the best results.

Once a week is a good rhythm for most beginners and improving players. Competitive juniors and adults preparing for tournaments often add a second session or a clinic. Your coach will suggest a schedule based on your goals.

Yes. We have access to lit courts around the Peninsula, so evening sessions are available. We are open daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Yes. Senior tennis lessons are paced to your comfort, women's and mixed adult classes are welcoming for all levels, and semi-private lessons work well for couples, friends or family members who want to learn together.

Look for certified coaches with real playing and teaching experience, a clear plan for your lessons, hands-on feedback and a friendly style that keeps you motivated. Our team is led by USTA 5.0-rated Lucas Rosenberg and Eric Dennis, who has more than 20 years in the sport.

We ask for at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule a private lesson. Parks and Recreation programs follow the cancellation and weather policies of the Hillsborough program.
